Family of James COLES (1779-1847) of Luppitt

Post by Colin »

James COLES (1779-1847) was born in Washfield, Devon and moved to Luppitt about 1819 after marrying Susan WERE (1777-c1832) in 1803. They had the following children:
Mary Ann COLES (1804-1868) = Thomas OAKES, 1829 Manchester
Elizabeth COLES (1806-1885) = Edmund DORRELL, c1830
John COLES (1807-1859) = Harriet TIDBOALD, 1831 Witheridge
Sarah COLES (c.1809-c.1850) = John MARCHANT, 1833 Luppitt
Samuel COLES (1810-1894) = Sarah HODGES, 1835 Luppitt
James COLES (1813-1890) = Harriet HOARE, 1835 Luppitt
Thomas COLES (1815-1905) = Harriet FARMER, 1839 Luppitt
Margaret COLES (1817-1892) = Edward LOCK, 1870 Luppitt
Charles COLES (1819-1905) = Elizabeth HOIL, 1843 Luppitt; Julia RUTLEY, 1885 Willand
William COLES (1823-1904) = Jane GRIFFIN, 1885; Lydia KNIGHT, 1865 Honiton

I am in contact with one or more descendants of each of the 6 sons but know little of the descendants of the 4 daughters.

I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has information on the ancestors of James COLES’ parents William COLES (1745-1829) of Washfield = Sarah NORMAN, 1769 Washfield.

Cheers

Well it has been a while!

William COLES (1745-1829) of Washfield was the son of William COLES (1723-1763) (= Elizabeth HURLEY) of Culmstock. His father was probably Samuel COLES (1699-?) of Churchstanton and Samuel's 2xG Grandfather was Humphry COLES (c.1623-1688) of Churchstanton.

Most of the COLES of Churchstanton appear to be descendants of Humphry COLES but one branch moved to Upottery. From Upottery two major sub-branches were headed by Henry COLES (1789-1858) (= Martha DYER), later of Chardstock, (Devon and then Dorset) and Henery COLES (1780-1855) (= Martha PYM) of Whitestaunton, Somerset and later of Upottery. Many of the baptisms and burials for these two families were recorded in Upottery.

I would be pleased to share information about any of these extensive families.

The story of the COLES of Washfield (and Luppitt) has recently been published under the title "When Cousins Meet" and a copy has been lodged with the Devon Heritage Centre.

Cheers from dusty and smokey Australia.
