Dates and Calendars.

The generally known basic fact, and for many purposes, all that need be considered, is 
that before 1752, the official English calendar reckoned the year as beginning on 25th 
March (Old Style or O S) and from 1752 the year was reckoned from 1st January (New Style 
or N S), and that it is customary to show the year by double indication for dates 
between 1st January and 14th March; thus for example 24th March 1715 should be written 
24th March 1715/16, and the following day would be 25th March 1716. The double indication 
can be found in some registers before 1752.
This much is well known, but there were complications, which affect church registers. 
The fact that both were changed in one year by the New Style Calendar Act has obscured 
the point that there was two quite separate factors involved: 
(a)	The 25th March new year was English practice from the twelfth century until 1751;
(b)	England used until 1752 the Julian calendar which incorporated a miscalculation 
of leap years; this had been amended by Pope Gregory XIII to produce the 
Gregorian calendar in 1582; this was promptly adopted in Catholic countries, but 
as a "popish invention", less readily so by Protestant countries.
Most of Europe had been using the 1st January new year before 1582. The New Style 
Calendar Act made two changes in the official calendar: (a) with effect from 1st January 
1752, the calendar year was reckoned from 1st January and (b) eleven days 3 – 13 
September 1752 were omitted to adjust to the Gregorian calendar, with adjusted 
calculation of leap years thereafter.
The English colonies including North America used the official English Calendar; 
Scotland however, adopted a 1st January New Year in 1600, although retaining the Julian 
calendar; Britain and its colonies were therefore, ten days (1582 – 1700) out of phase 
with the calendar used in much of Western Europe.
